Sweet Daddy Luv

Years ago, I was at a record sale and my home-away-from-home Death of Vinyl. At the same time, there was major activity going on in the lofty location. I remember being at one of the listening stations, having trouble listening to 12" singles with the music blasting from the other room. I was also having trouble listening to the records because the DJ was playing very interesting music. I remember holding back from dropping the needle on my turntable sometimes so that I wouldn't miss another selection.

It got to a point where I was deciding whether or not to approach the DJ. I eventually did make my way to him, as anyone that knows me can attest. I had heard him spoken of in high regard. I finally put a face to the name, Sweet Daddy Luv.

Whenever a DJ gets me to ask what they're playing, they have me. If I repeatedly ask or hover over the turntable, they're killing me! I felt I would have to step away from him for fear I'd piss him off. He seemed to not be affected by my lingering and loitering which was of great comfort and relief.

The invitation to be on my radio show came next as some are familiar with the routine. It was years in the waiting and worth every track. Fortunately he made a second long-overdue Suite Delight appearance at my former university radio station.

The One Tash & Sweet Daddy Luv were my DJs of choice for my Igloofest 2011 experience because I did not and could not make it to any other night.

It was a pleasure for me to have been invited to bring my perspective and spin (pardon the pun) on some of the  most influential music of the 1980’s at Royal Phoenix’s Syntax Era.

Below is the short film The Luv of Music by Vincent Guignard documenting some of Sweet Daddy Luv's process in creating his 100th mix Whither Canada?

Sweet Daddy Luv is The Goods' special guest at La Sala Rossa (4848 St. Laurent) on October 26.
