Wilson Pickett

I’ve seen Wilson Pickett's name and heard his voice before I knew what he looked like. When I was younger, my mother would ask me to play her 7" records on my Fisher Price record player on weekends, especially Sundays. If I was ever a record snob, I was back then when I'd downright refuse to play her old dirty records on the same Fisher Price record player that just played Thriller or Purple Rain. Who was Wilson Pickett and why was he screaming on the song? When do I stop playing her old records and get back to playing mine?

One artist I particularly want to read, know and learn more about is Wilson Pickett. I have written about how much I love his music but that was writing from a fan perspective. There are so many Wilson stories, facts and details I would like to know about but there appears to be few to no sources of information.

Waxpoetics is the ideal place where die-hard or other casual Pickett fans can read and see more about the Wicked One. I don't believe Waxpoetics Magazine has done an in-depth article on him. If it hasn’t, I hope my prayers for a published Pickett article come true someday.

Through my late uncle, I learned about Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and of course Wilson Pickett. He had the three-disc compilation called The Otis Redding Story which I dubbed onto audio casettes, brought home to Montreal and killed. Within no time, I sought and owned nearly all of Otis Redding's discography.

My uncle only had Wilson Pickett Greatest Hits but I brought home the cassette dub and killed it, just like I did with Otis Redding. However, this time it was different. At that time, James Brown was my epitome of funky soul, and still is, but Wilson Pickett screaming in the songs got me.

If I could sing, I would sing exactly like Wilson Pickett.  I can't so therefore I reach for his music any chance I get.

I came across a book about him.

DJ Solespin - WeFunk

If and when I’d be home on a Friday night, the radio was tuned to CKUT 90.3FM’s WeFunk.

Someone told they listened to my last appearance on WeFunk and I told them it was one of the most pivotal moments in my life.

Almost everything I've done with djing & records stems from that night at CKUT with DJ Static. Years later, I'm now on CKUT and blessed enough to be spinning for the public on a weekly basis.

If you want to know anything about how & why I do what I do with music, this is the best place to find out.

DJ Solespin @ Mod Club Montreal (Bar de Courcelle)

History has a funny way of repeating itself.

Three years ago during the first day of the Puces Pop Record Fair, I was content just to be digging for treasure records.  That was until I heard treasured records being played by two DJs.

Soulful sounds of the 1960s (that I didn't know, had not heard or seen for that matter) burst through the speakers and the expected invitation for the pair to join me on The Suite Delight radio show followed.

Fast-forward to September 2015 and DJ Parka Pat heard my DJ set on the first day of the Puces Pop Record Fair.  An invitation for me to join him for his Mod Club Montreal night at Bar de Courcelle followed.

Check us out on April 23 at Bar de Courcelle (4685 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, Montreal, Quebec) where I return for another frenzy of vintage 1960s soul, funk & rock on the decks spun on vinyl & 45's.

DJ Andy Couchman (December 2012)

DJ Andy Couchman may not take too well to the term legend but in my mind, as well as those of my generation, the title is apropos.

For most record connoisseurs and collectors, It is not difficult to describe what James Brown’s Sex Machine, Isaac Hayes’ Hot Buttered Soul, Sly & The Family Stone’s There’s A Riot Going On and The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album covers look like. It is also not difficult to imagine the impact those albums must have had on popular culture. For most in my demographic, that is all we can do. Couchman was DJing with those records when they were first released.

I was introduced to Bob Marley’s music before I would care about it. Couchman introduced reggae music to post-disco Montreal clubs in the early 1980s.

The Friday night Prince Montreal Jazz Festival concert is the best show I’ve ever attended. Maceo Parker was a featured musician for many numbers including a small James Brown tribute. Couchman told me a highlight of his career as DJ is opening for Parker.

A highlight of my six years of Concordia University's radio is receiving DJ Andy Couchman as guest DJ on the December 8 episode of The Suite Delight from 8-10pm EST.

**On this particular date, I filled in for the show on before mine. Due to technical difficulties prior to my regular broadcast time, the first hour of the podcast was lost and the recording resumed during the Martha High & Speedometer track.**

This download, along with others, can be found on my Podomatic website.
