ANGO

ANGO had the distinct honor of being the first Montreal artist to make a major impact on me in 2012.

I learned about ANGO days before one of my former radio show broadcasts and ended up adding four of his songs to the playlist. Of the four, the cover of Sade’s No Ordinary Love and Better For You are still my personal favorites.

The spotlight on the singer was spontaneous and forced me to find more ANGO music. The Serpentine EP helped a great deal in the quest.

History repeated as ANGO returned to playlists on the eve of another Sofa King Raw Pop Montreal talent showcase.

ANGO’s onstage presence was hard to ignore.  He was the most energetic of all the Pop Montreal artists I had seen perform.  If Michael Jackson was not an influence on ANGO musically, the case was proven that night at Le Belmont.  With one black glove and non-stop movement on the stage, the late King of Pop’s work ethic for performing was present that night and was well appreciated.  In addition, the Rock With You homage reinforced the point.
However, the one song most there looked forward was his rendition of Sade’s No Ordinary Love.  Strategically, it arrived at the tail end of his set.

Vocally, ANGO’s falsetto was the most resonant of the Pop Montreal singers I heard as well.  The combination of that unique vocal quality with enough energy to captivate all in attendance makes for a great concert experience.

One wonders if the title of the EP is not a tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire or simply Philip Bailey. Ironically, I played a song from the album with Serpentine Fire along with his True Blue on my most recent broadcast.
