Primitive Records is one of the most iconic record stores in Montreal.
At the time I learned of the store, the movement of looking for original breaks and samples had started by myself, many Montreal DJs and producers and even visitors from other countries.
I remember seeing the It’s Just Begun album by The Jimmy Castor Bunch hanging on the wall at Primitive before I would know what Castor looked like or that a Big Daddy Kane song sprung from it.
It’s Just Begun is easily one of hip hop culture’s most important recordings associated with the origins of the culture itself. Primitive Records was the first place I saw the record and the only place to find records of that calbre. That was why local and out-of-town diggers went to the store.
Eduardo told me of the 25th Anniversary Party at Le Bleury when I saw him at the Puces Pop Record Fair and I knew I would do what I could to be there.
The announced roster of seasoned DJs including Akufen, Peter Lightburn, Rawsoul and Soundshaper would be enticing to see and hear.
Most in attendance were moving and grooving to the sounds of late 1970s/early 1980s boogie/R&B.
Deservedly, Eduardo capped off the night with some choice cuts. It was my first time witnessing him work the turntables and possibly for a few poeple there too. I presume it won't be our last.
