In a recent discussion with a local record store owner, I came to the realization that August 2016 will mark my being on college radio for the last decade.
Since 2006, the radio stations, timeslots, blog names, my own DJ name have changed. The one constant has been me
Whether I knew it or not, change was going to come to me in some form or another. My perspective on music and life have changed over the last 10 years bringing me
to this moment.
After 10 years, however, I am at a crossroads.
I'm not the only one doing what I do at CKUT or any other college radio for that matter. My personal best DJ selection has always been saved for my guest fill-in DJ appearances on The Goods.
The challenges of having an overnight timeslot are not easy to ignore. It has become difficult for me to market my show becuase I have been too diverse with my selections to identify the target audience.
For the longest time, whenever I would be asked what my "niche" was, I would tell them I was eclectic. I refused to be classified, boxed-in, pigeon-holed or pinned down to a simple category. My philosophy was that I never wanted to limit myself or the listener to one specific genre of music. At this point, I'm considering making a decision for the next direction the radio show will take.
At my core, I am a crate-digger and record collector. The vintage sounds of the 1960-1990s have always been a joy to spin and hear. What is even more a joy for me is discovering the original smaples to modern songs/production. I believe that The Suite Delight radio show now going the route of strictly samples is exactly what I need to rejuvenate my love for music and radio and to give the framework that I'd be glad to follow.
I'm proud of the music I've played on my show over the years.
