His DJ set was the highlight of my 2010 year and manages to be the standard by which I measure DJ sets. I now have to explore the music he has made to see if there are any other Theo treats waiting for me.
2. Duck Down Vs BlackSmith - Le Poisson Rouge, New York

This is another show that was so monumental that I wrote about as well. I left the venue realizing that there is good hip hop out there but like we all know, we have to look for it. I also realized that classic Buckshot, Black Moon and hip hop in general has no equal.
3. Gilles Peterson – La Tulipe

Some artists coming to Montreal will guarantee my being present at the venue. Gilles Peterson is one of those people. I regret not taking photos of him while he performed at La Tulipe. I knew little to none of the tracks he played for most of the night but danced anyway. It took him playing what he wanted to play near the end of his set for me to recognize songs by Bill Withers & Linda Clifford. In a year of my seeing and hearing some DJ heroes of mine, Gilles Peterson was a true summer pleasure.
4. Daedelus, The Gaslamp Killer, SAMIYAM & Teebs - Le Belmont

I liked little to none of the Daedelus music I had heard prior to that Belmont night. Luckily I didn’t write Daedelus or anything affiliated with him off because had I done so, I would not have gone to see or hear him. I’m glad I saw and heard him, Gaslamp Killer, SAMIYAM & Teebs. I’ll do what I can to be more familiar with their music from now on.
5. Cut Chemist, DJ Spinna, Telephoned & Jasmine Solano - Red Bull Space, New York

I have a lot of respect for DJ/producers like Cut Chemist and DJ Spinna. When I heard they would be spinning during my time at CMJ, you could be sure I would be there. They represent what I strive for with my blog, radio show and DJing skills. Cut Chemist gave me a vinyl copy of the mix he performed that night which explains the smile on my face in our photo.
6. Rhymesayers Breakin' Dawn Tour - Foufounes Electriques

The Brother Ali/Fashawn show was so good that I had to blog about it. I can’t forget The Narcicyst’s great performance either. By the end of the night, I had greater respect for all the artists. For someone that cares little about the current hip hop scene, everyone involved with that show made a believer out of me for a little while.
7. Sean Price - Cabaret du Mile End

Even though Montreal gets a lot of past-prime hip hop artists passing through, Sean P is one of my favorite MCs and I didn’t let the chance to see him live slip through my fingers. I was hoping he would be as hype during the CMJ showcase as he was in Montreal but that was not the case. There was such a delay in him getting on stage that there was a fear permeating among the crowd that he wouldn’t show. At least I got a hype show out of two from him this year.
8.
Mary Hell - Piknic Electronik

My first Piknic Electronik was memorable because of Mary Hell. The set seemed endless, as were the grooves. Like the Theo Parrish Mutek set, I knew little of the songs and that forced me to study RPM a bit more so that I don’t feel like a babe in the woods as much.
9. Andy Williams Goods solo set – Sala Rossa

That August Andy Williams weekend was unforgettable. Andy Williams, whom I hadn’t seen or heard DJ in many months, was performing solo for a typically receptive Goods crowd. On top of that, I was asked to make a guest appearance on The Goods radio show the next day which was literally a dream come true.
10. Sweet Daddy Luv – Casa Del Popolo

I’ve made many trips to Casa Del Popolo to catch Sweet Daddy Luv spin. It was a perfect way to unwind with a pint of stout, an insufficient portion of chips & salsa and great music. I learned I should pay attention to groups like Ratatat and The Hundred in the Hands. I also learned the DJ Luv’s Records website was in the works and has been releasing mixes at an alarming rate. Another invitation for Sweet Daddy Luv to join me on Suite Delight has been extended and it is just a matter of time until he brings more of his Casa, Koi & Record Canyon goodies to my show again.
